Welcome back to Week 3 of my new series called Embodiment as Sacred Force for Change!  Today’s episode was recorded under the Full Moon in Libra amidst Aries season, and we acknowledge this week's outrageous, yet sadly unsurprising news that the Supreme Court has agreed to hear arguments about birthright citizenship; in law birthright citizenship is simply defined as automatically granting citizenship (as a legal status) to children upon their birth, regardless of parental citizenship status.  We name how the case is part of a larger web of imperialism, supremacy systems, and forced migration driven by colonization.  We hold the essential question: how do we stay regulated enough to respond with clarity and power?

Under the Libra Full Moon and Aries Season Fire, we explore balance and spark, differentiation and action. We name why modern nervous system science like polyvagal theory and interpersonal neurobiology need to be held alongside older truths that were practiced long before institutions tried to patent and gatekeep them. Decolonized healing means remembering that embodied wisdom is not owned, and that access to regulation, connection, and well-being is for all.

We then go into the autonomic nervous system (sympathetic and parasympathetic), cues of safety, co-regulation, and the social engagement system, plus a deep dive into the vagus nerve and the autonomic ladder; ventral vagal (parasympathetic), sympathetic fight-flight-freeze, and dorsal vagal shutdown (parasympathetic). I also explain the Safe and Sound Protocol as a listening therapy that uses filtered sound frequencies to help the nervous system detect safety again, especially for complex trauma, chronic stress, and neurodivergent sensory patterns.

We close with a vocalization ritual and a victory chant, plus an invitation to speak, howl, or scream sacred rage in a way that frees the body and calls in the world we are building together.

Welcome And Decolonized Healing Frame

SPEAKER_00

Hello, friend. Welcome. Let's get ready to dare together. I'm your host, Erin O'Brien, and I'm daring to create and hold space for decolonized healing, transformation, and collective liberation. I'm a licensed psychotherapist for over 20 years, a relationship counselor, a spiritual intuitive, a shadow worker, and a witch. And I believe that true therapeutic practice calls for right action and remembers all the ways of well-being. This is a place that will remember the old truths and reconnect them to their land and to their people. Together, we will unite the relational, social, spiritual, psychological, ancestral, scientific, and magical because it is most powerful when working as a sacred whole, as are we. 2026 is a time to dare to create the world that we've been dreaming of, to dare to be the dream we have been waiting for. Let's do it. All right. And it's pretty horrific because the Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments related to birthright citizenship. And it just points to what is happening and the ongoing impact of imperialism and supremacy systems. And this could impact about a quarter of a million babies born in what is called the United States each year and millions of others. And this case is referred to as the birthright citizenship case, but more formally it's known as versus Barbara. And just to speak a little bit about this, Barbara is, of course, a pseudonym for one of the parents who are challenging the executive order on behalf of a child. And this is a mother, and she came to the US from Honduras seeking asylum. And I want to add that all of the forced migration that is happening across the globe is connected to colonization. And we are villainizing, well, not we, but the powers that be are villainizing the human beings that are being forced to migrate to new lands and new countries that are not their country of origin because of the deep-rooted lasting impact of colonization and imperialism. So that's a really devastating and unsurprising example. And that this even rose to the Supreme Court, and that the Supreme Court agreed to hear arguments about this, it really is a sign for all of us to continue to do the work that needs doing, continue to organize and take care of each other and find joy and places where we can resist and places where we do have power, because this is an example, but one of many about what is taking place here on this land and under this particular regime. So now I want to go into the full moon. I am recording on April 1st, Wednesday, and it is a full moon in Libra at 12 degrees, and we are in Aries season. And Libra and Aries are on the same axis. So they are both polarities of each other and also complementary balancing forces. And Libra in particular is a symbol and sign that holds the both and, holds the harmony, the balance, the bringing things together and seeking places of difference. And as we know, Aries is the first sign of the zodiac. It is the spark, it is the will and a place of beginning. One of my children is an Aries son, and she holds a lot of that fiery, initiatory, passionate, mobilizing, activating energy. And people will often pass by her, and she'll be beaming and smiling and moving about, and they'll comment on how do I bottle up that energy for myself? I mean, I hear that often. And my child's name happens to be Sunny. She also is very much in her solar power, kind of beams this radiant, fierce force of the sun. All right. So we are going to dive in. We are on week three of the spring to summer, spring equinox to summer solstice, 14 or 15 weekly episodes focused in on embodiment a sacred force for change. And the last two weeks, I've been making a lot of space for vocalization and a bit of the science related to that, and also a bit of how to use it in your practice and whether you want to add breath, add movement. This is embodiment practice for all bodies. And you're activating and warming up your voice. And there are lots of wounds connected to the different parts of our body, and our ability to be more embodied and feel safe enough inside the home of our bodies, the house of our soul, of our spirit. And it's our personal earth, our personal land. And so we are deeply rooted and connected to the earth and the land and to each other. So what we're going to focus in on in today's episode, I am going to do an overview of the science of being more embodied and signaling safe enough cues to both ourselves internally and externally to the beings around us. And this is very powerful and very promising and holds so much possibility for what we can accomplish specifically right now and also in creating the world that we want to be in. I'm going to move into talking about the autonomic nervous system. I'm going to speak about some of the kind of modern theorists and scientists and researchers connected to polyvagal theory, interpersonal neurobiology that I've spoken a bit about before. And I also want to name that a lot of these modern understandings and theories that have, of course, been patented by medical and mental health provider training, and you need to get certified and all of these things. I want to acknowledge that in a decolonized healing space and world that we are moving towards, there is free access and resource to these wisdoms and to these ways of being and healing and holding space. And our ancestors and indigenous cultures and ancient civilizations were in deep awareness that no one owns or has prior claim to these innate embodied ways of being and healing and existing and connecting, right? That it is free to all beings and should be, and that there can be an exchange of the abundance of these resources and these skills and these ways of working with each other and with the body and with spirit and with the seen and unseen. So I'm going to be speaking about modern theorists and researchers and tools while also holding the complexity that these have been known and practiced with abundant generosity for thousands and thousands and thousands of years. And there was no privileging, right, or gatekeeping of this knowledge and of these ways of healing and promoting well-being. I want to also name how it was co-opted. And then the very cultures and peoples that originated these ideas and these contributions were then delegitimized, right? So that white, het, Western, Eurocentric, predominantly cis male were the ones seen as being the inventors and the originators of these ideas and methods that actually predate them and come from a much, much longer, longer lineage without giving due credit. So colonization loves to take credit for shit that is not theirs. And we are here in modern day life. So there are ways that this ancient wisdom is organized in a modern fashion. That is a part of colonization. And I own this. You need to jump through these hoops to have access to that. And I know as someone who is a provider myself that I am a part of that colonization. And that way that the mental health industrial complex and the medical industrial complex continues to perpetuate these colonizing systems and ways of hoarding, quite frankly. And we're still trying to figure out right how to share and exchange and be in reciprocity. And we haven't figured it out. That's a part of creating the new world. So I just want to name that. And also being a human being that lives in this current modern world and is caught in the web of it and trying to figure out how to change that and detangle all of our selves and families and communities from this deep impact of colonization here on Turtle Island, here, which is named the United States. And we know that people lived here in reciprocity with the land and with the rhythms and with the seasons and with the earth in harmony and not taking more than they needed, and also not to idealize indigenous folks and cultures because we are all human and we are all at the mercy of being a human in an animal body and the ways that that can show up, and also acknowledging the profound wisdom and intelligence that indigenous cultures all around the globe had in working with the reciprocity of life and the land in a way that is sustainable and respectful, and not sheer dominance and greed and violence and immediate gratification and short-sightedness around what kind of legacy is going to be left for generations to come. So I just went on a whole thing. Okay. Anyway getting into the science and the deep dive of today's episode. And in my mind, having more knowledge and more information shared freely is a part of the energy of the full moon, which is all about healing. Because the more knowledge and intuition that gets integrated and rekindled and redistributed, let's say, into our collective bodies and minds and hearts and souls and spirits, we are more able to move into greater consciousness and greater choice because we have more knowledge and resource that is accessible to us as we move through our moment-to-moment day to day. So in the spirit of the full moon in Libra, in Aries season, we are going to bring in that understanding of our body and the innate healing potential that exists in all of us, that is free. No one has prior claim to it. It actually exists in your body. And so it is yours, and it has always belonged to you because you are a part of the earth and you belong to the land, and we belong to each other. So I'm just, you know, going on a whole thing, but I will now move into what we came here to talk about today, in addition to a little bit of vocalization practice, which we will get into towards the end. And I'm gonna start with talking about our autonomic nervous system. And I'm gonna talk about kind of at the heart, it's this mind-body connection, right? And we know in the conventional Western medicine, there's this fragmentation, this misunderstanding or this blatant denial, maybe, of looking at how our biological processes are constantly affecting each other. So if something is going on with your heart, there's likely another part of your physiology that is affecting it and being affected by it. So it's all a spiral that connects. And, you know, our ancestors knew this, and certainly different traditions, like, for example, looking at the Ayurvedic tradition, understanding prana as this life force, vital energy that moves through the body and moves through in specific the chakras and how that is connected to our dis-ease and our biological, physiological processes, our mental wellness. And so they really acknowledge the impact of more holistic understanding of um subtle body and energetic influence, and of course, traditional Chinese medicine, looking at qi and how that literally is this subtle influence, or again, vital energy, that is the cause of most physiological processes. And when there's not proper balance, you're gonna see health issues in all dimensions, and certainly from a spiritual and physical and mental and emotional standpoint. So, you know, these are ancient systems of treating the human from a really holistic place. Okay, so I just went off on a whole thing like I do. Okay, Erin, focus. All right, I'm coming back to the autonomic nervous system because I'm gonna geek out for a moment. I'm gonna read directly from a program. It's called Unite, and they essentially have partnered with this modern neuroscientist, Stephen Porgias, who developed the polyvagal theory and really looking at the autonomic nervous system and how it's actually the key to well-being and overall health. And so this is our Western modern take on what ancient traditions and other cultures have known, you know, we're kind of playing catch up a bit here. And let me back up. I won't go on a whole tangent, but I will back up for a moment because one of the new developments that I mentioned related to what I'm offering for my relationship clients, and I work primarily with relationships. So people coming in to really heal and transform their current relationship. Any important relationship, really, I work with couples, I work with family dyads, friends, any relationship matters. All relationships matter. Let's be real. So one of the exciting things that I've been doing a deep dive in, it's called the Safe and Sound Protocol. And essentially, it's a listening therapy. And it works to build resilience and flexibility back into your autonomic nervous system. And it recognizes that just like our brain has neuroplasticity, our nervous system can be reset and retuned. So these things are all connected, right? So it's really exciting because if you're someone who has complex PTSD or complex trauma, and you're kind of constantly in these stages of fight-flight freeze or full shutdown dissociation, and you just kind of cycle back and forth from those hyper-arousal to hypoarousal, that really takes a toll on your body. And so being able to work with practices that can shift that, that can help your body actually feel safer from the inside through regulatory practices, through co-regulation with other people, and through different types of therapies that use sound and music and voice and the vagus nerve. So I'm getting ahead of myself. I'm gonna back up and I'll also link some of this in my little notes. You can have these resources. So essentially, the nervous system is all about balance. So the nervous system is oriented toward health and healing, seeking to find and maintain homeostasis, a steady state of internal physical and emotional balance, and I would say also energetic and spiritual that allows us to function at our best, right? To move into our highest places. Of vibration, that higher self-consciousness or alignment with all parts of self, right? You're kind of really in that balance, that alignment. And so this balance can be disrupted, of course, in lots of different ways through rapid societal change, chronic stress, adverse life experiences. And so this brochure lists off a bunch of things. So chronic health problems, mental health conditions, substance abuse challenges, attention and learning differences, changes in appetite, energy, desire, interest, difficulty sleeping, feelings of loneliness and isolation, difficulty connecting with others. Basically everything, y'all. So our body and being embodied is the key. And it starts with our nervous system. The mind-body connection is all about the autonomic nervous system and how it influences everything. Finding balance means that you need to regulate the nervous system to be able to be in a place of resilience and flexibility. This does not mean that we just live in this like safe, calm, relaxed, chill place all the time. No. What it means is that we are able to moment to moment be aware of what our state is, what our body cues are telling us. And they give us cues in three different domains. From between us, our relationships, our nervous systems literally are speaking to each other all the time. How amazing is that? Because it means that if we are able to be in our power and in our embodiment and really be in an active awareness of our sensory experience, our physiological state, how aligned we feel in terms of parts of self, right? Like really being in that awareness, we are signaling safety and welcome and invitation to connect or to collaborate or to shelter, right, to the people around us. I mean, that's pretty profound. Think about the ripple effect of that. You pass someone on the street and you have been taking some deep breaths, or maybe you're humming, maybe you're listening to a song you love, and you're smiling, and your face connects to your heart. And that's where our social engagement system operates from. It's the face-heart connection, it's how we use our eyes, our expression, our voice, what we hear, and how that makes us feel like we can be open and present and able to respond and receive others. So you smile at this stranger, and maybe they were feeling a bit in like a fight-flight moment. You know, maybe they got honked at because they were crossing the street and a car was being, you know, impatient or something, and they're feeling a little, you know, stressed, and they kind of see you coming and they see this smile on your face, and you make eye contact, and your face communicates to their face, and your nervous system literally communicates to theirs a cue of safety, and they can feel that between the two of you, and then because they're able to interpret that in their own body, it then cues from the inside, cues of safety, and then maybe they smile back at you, and now there's this reciprocal energetic dance happening with someone that you might literally just have this interaction for three seconds, probably less. But then that has a chance to ripple out. Now maybe that person is more likely to signal cues of safety and connection to the next stranger. And it ripples out. So it matters and it's really powerful. And I'm not trying to be like bypassy here around like if we are just constantly smiling, we're gonna save the world. I mean, it's more understanding how our bodies were built and designed divinely to change, to influence, to impact for the good. I'm also not saying that you should engage and be receptive, right, to people who are legitimately dangerous and threatening. This is not about dulling your very vital nervous system to give you that burst of adrenaline and cortisol if you do need to run away from someone who is not safe, right? So, what this resilience is about is about being able to move in and out with flexibility, these different states that are happening all the time, right? Okay, I went off on a whole thing. Is there anything else I want to? Okay, maybe I'll say one more thing. This is gonna be longer than 30 minutes, but that's cool. So, what the safe and sound protocol is that Stephen Poor just developed is working with the autonomic nervous system in some really cool ways. And anyone who's interested in this can certainly reach out to me. Of course, it's something I offer in my therapy practice with my current relationships that I work with. And I want to just read from the brochure because they say it a little bit better than me. So the music of the Safe and Sound Protocol has been specially filtered to highlight frequencies of sound that typically make us feel safe. How freaking genius is this? These types of frequencies can be found in everyday sounds, such as certain types of talking and laughter, water flowing, wind or leaves rustling, and musical instruments. However, some people's nervous systems have a harder time interpreting safety on their own. This can include, but not limited, to individuals who have had traumas or difficult life events, developmental trauma or attachment traumas, who are living with ongoing illness or injury or chronic pain, or have sensory learning or developmental differences. They have a different neurotype, right? Maybe they're neurospicy, neurodivergent. So this listening therapy is amazing because it essentially works with your ear. Oh, how cool! Right now you are listening to my voice, right? And right now I just did a intentional thing. I dropped my tone and I'm speaking a little slower, and I'm speaking in a way that the um prosody, I don't know if I'm actually saying that word right, but whatever. The melody, the rhythm, the tone, how the cadence is flooding your system right now with uh cues of safety, which give your body from the inside the experience of being able to tone your vagus nerve and feel some relaxation, moving you into it's called the ventral vagal, part of our autonomic nervous system. And that is think of maybe like the green zone, right? Where you're you're feeling open and present and able to connect, able to grow, able to think and feel at the same time, able to really engage, to focus. This is a great place to be in. It's where we have to be in, actually, when we want to experience pleasure or intimacy or creativity. So it's a really important part of our autonomic nervous system. It's the state that allows us to feel safe enough to connect, right? And when we're able to feel safe enough to connect, we can signal safety to the people around us. And then that has that beautiful exchange of reciprocity. They signal safety back to us, the co-regulation when you're cuddling with someone you care about or you smile back at someone. I mean, these are all co-regulation ways of being. So it's really cool because what the safe and sound protocol does through the listening therapy is it helps restore the ability of the nervous system to uh take in cues of safety. So it sort of floods the nervous system with cues of safety so the listener can feel more calm, engaged, and balanced, right? So that's really exciting. And the like therapeutic core part of it, the part that's actually doing the like science technology piece with the sound frequencies, because that's just so cool. It's working with the middle ear in specific. And so it's exercising the middle ear to be able to start to take in these kind of middle range tones that cue safety to the nervous system. And typically what happens when you have chronic nervous system dysregulation, your middle ear, friends, this is wild, is impacted in a way where typically it can only now pick up frequencies with more regularity. Pick up frequencies of the high or very low tones. So you think ambulance siren siren or thunder. Those tones signal threat and danger to our body, right? This listening therapy is so amazing because it helps you to reset your nervous system with more resilience and flexibility through the middle ear, through auditory processing, through nervous system regulation. I mean, it's just awesome. And I want to talk a minute about the vagus nerve. Okay. So the autonomic nervous system helps regulate important systems in the body like our heart rate, blood pressure, breathing, digestion, everything. And it relies on a nerve that is hugely important to our overall well-being. It's the vagus nerve. Let me try that again. It's the vagus nerve. Now I'm a lounge singer. The vagus nerve is the longest cranial nerve in the body, stretching from the brain stem all the way down to the stomach. It is often referred to as the mind-body connection. And our ancestors knew this. Why do you think we hum and sing to our babies, to our children who have underdeveloped abilities to self-regulate? We cannot learn to self-regulate without someone first co-regulating with us to shape our body and our nervous system and our brain. It's really powerful. So when you don't get this in childhood, it affects us. So we need to work with our body to trust it, that it knows how to how to heal and how to transform, because it does. Now I lost my place because I went off on a thing. Okay. The vagus nerve sends and receives information between the brain and body, helping us respond to changes in our internal and external environment. Okay. So hold on, la la la la la. Okay, I'm gonna say one more thing, then I'm gonna shift. When we are under stress, right now I'm getting into what's called the autonomic ladder, right? So there's a hierarchy to how we respond to perceived threat. Okay, so I'm I'm in ventral vehicle, I'm socially engaged, I'm singing, I'm feeling present, you know, I'm I'm standing up right now, I'm swaying around, la la la. And I'm feeling, you know, connected. So let's say all of a sudden something loud happens in my home, which is where I'm currently recording because my family is not here. So it's quiet. And um if I hear something strange from the world around me, I'm going to be flooded with cortisol and adrenaline. I'm good, my heart's gonna pick up, my fight-flee uh sympathetic response is gonna kick in. My heart rate, my blood pressure increases, my breathing speeds up, and I become hyper-aware of my surroundings. My vision literally narrows. It's like so wild. Also, what happens, according to polyvagal theory, the other part of our autonomic nervous system is the dorsal vagal, the dorsal division. Okay, so I'm gonna attach some stuff. So you can Google it, you can look at it. But essentially, think of a ladder. At the top of the ladder is our social engagement system, is online, we're ready to go, we're engaged, la la la, we're in the green. And our our body has then pretty much simply put, we get enough signs of threat that outweigh our current experience of safety, and zoop, down the ladder we go, and we're now in the red zone, which is the sympathetic fight, flight, freeze, all of that, right? Um, we're we're running from the tiger, the wild animal chasing us. Now, let's say, you know, we can't we can't get away. Then our brilliant body, brilliant nervous system shifts all the way down our autonomic ladder, which Deb Dana, uh, Dana, Dana created this in working with polyvagal theory can practice, and it's really great. And basically, we go into shutdown, dissociation. We lose consciousness sometimes, and we immobilize. So you can think of sympathetic as we're mobilized, and dorsal as we are immobilized, right? So the dorsal vagus helps our body shut down in response to stress, much like an animal playing dead when they can't run or fight. So this is like very deep evolution survival. When we feel safe, the ventral vagus brings our body into homeostasis and is connected to a social engagement system, which I just went on about. And our nervous system then supports social behaviors like facial expressions, smiling, listening, and being able to connect and talk. Here's the other thing. When our nervous system is more resilient and flexible and can move in and out of states with more ease, when we have enough time in our social engagement system, enough of that green ventral energy, we have access to higher order cognitive process. So we can learn differently. All that executive functioning stuff happens way there. So it's really important for us to have enough experience of cues of safety coming up from ourselves, giving it to ourselves from important relationships and from the world. Now, my dears, I am going to go into vocalization practice. And I pulled a card from the Morrigan is calling you deck. And this is one I've pulled from before. Sorry, it's called Call of the Morrigan Oracle. And it was written by Stephanie Woodfield, Karen Storm Ingert, and the art is by Naomi Kornock. So anyway, pretty beautiful, awesome deck I pull from often. And the card I got for today because I was wanting some guidance around what should the vocalization practice be for this full moon. We're in Aries season, and what do we need? And I got the victory card. So I want to read what it's calling us in for. And the key words are success, achievement, overcoming odds. Cormac's glossary lists Maka's acorn crap or Masras Maka as heads of men killed in battle. Okay, so this is like ancient mythology here, folks. It can be a little intense, and warfare was a regular part of Irish life, and also it involved so much more than just what war means in modern day. So the Morrigan stands on the ground, and the battle has been hard, but the two a day can now celebrate and join their voices in a great shout as the final victory is claimed. The divinatory meaning of this card, your battle may have been long and bloody, but you have attained victory. Victory brings with it a time of reprieve and celebration. Enjoy your success, celebrate it. Just like the Morrigan, covered in the blood of a hard-won battle. This may have been a hard-won victory. Take the time to enjoy what you have accomplished. Victory can also represent the future success of a venture or project. Just remember, the path may not be easy, but victory is attainable. So I want to now read the chant. And I'm going to speak it loudly, but I am recording this piece of today's episode in my office, and there's other folks here. So I can't really use my loud sovereign scream as I would want to, but that is going to be your vocalization embodiment practice for this week, should you decide to do that. So I'm going to go ahead and read this and then I'm going to talk a little bit about what the heck I mean. Maka, red cloaked, fiery one. Hear my voice clear and strong, my thoughts and deeds, right and just. Let me be true to myself as I travel toward victory. Maka, red queen, bless my path to victory. Typically, I would chant that three times. And in the purpose of time, I'm going to just leave it there. What I want to encourage and embolden you to do, if you should choose to, is a part of what I'm feeling from this card, given what is happening on this land right now, given the birthright citizenship case, and all of the sacred rage that that brings up, and all of the ways that I want to transmute that into something that helps me stand in my sovereignty and my power. And so I want to suggest that at some point this week you pull a poem out that you love, that makes you feel connected to your fierce force. And you say it out loud, loudly. Maybe you shout it. Maybe you just loudly yell outside, up at the full moon. Maybe you howl at the full moon. Maybe you are able to scream into the woods, let the earth and the trees hold your cries. And your shouts and let them be proclaiming our collective victory. Let them call in the victory that is ours to claim, and that we have the power to manifest and create. And so let your let your embodied practice this week be a scream of sacred rage, releasing that energy from your body, moving it around, channeling it out into the collective, letting it be a call, a sacred siren of sorts, where you are proclaiming that this stops now. This kind of old world and the ways that we harm each other and dehumanize each other and degrade each other. It stops now. Let it be a scream, let it be a call, let it be a cry. And let that energy imbue you. Let you be more at home in your body with that beautiful magnitude of courage of heart and calling in the victory that is to come. And the times that are arriving. We are actively co-creating them together every time we dream and bring in the vision and the feeling in our body of the kind of world we want to live in. That's an embodied dream of the interconnected relationships and trust and kindness and peace and supporting each other through challenges, certainly, and differences and celebrating our ways that we are different. And that's pulling in the Libra energy of holding the difference and harmonizing and uniting the differences because we are more powerful when the beautiful diversity of our actual self is integrated and we move from that place of wholeness and the beautiful, powerful diversity of the world, the global world, and how there's so much knowledge and wisdom and love that is abundant and ready to be felt and shared and experienced finally. So you're going to scream your sacred rage and you're going to call in the victory. And it's here because we are doing this. We're unstoppable when we're in our body and we're empowered, right? We're unstoppable when the system tries to tell us that we're small and powerless and should be afraid. And how dare us, and we can't change anything. What's one person gonna do? One person is gonna focus in on being embodied, and that is resistance. And if all of us did that, whoa, everything would change. As above, so below, as within, so without, as the universe, so the soul. Bye for now.
